Our first topic in Year 5 is Earth and Space. Scroll down to see some examples of our wonderful work.

Year 5 had an amazing time recently on a three day retreat to Alton Castle. The theme of the retreat was being a good disciple. Throughout the trip the children participated in many fun activities including wall climbing, survival skills, biking, hiking and completing an adventure course. The class had so much fun completing their tasks! They were able to reflect on each task and think about how they had been a good disciple, helping their friends along the way.

In addition to the activities, the children also had the opportunity to join in in many prayer sessions, learn new songs and participate in a Mass. A fantastic time was had by all, new friends were made and it was an experience I’m sure all of the children will remember for a long time to come!

The children in Year 5 have thoroughly enjoyed our Autumn Earth and Space topic. They have learnt so much in such a short space of time (no pun intended). Scroll down to see the amazing things they have been up to here at Holy Redeemer.

September 2017

To help us learn the order of the planets we made up our own mnemonics, watched videos, played games and even made our own dioramas.

We have also been busy learning about the sun and the orbits of the Earth and moon. We made posters, created animations using J2E, made working models and even used dance and drama to help us with our learning!

On Monday 9th October the children presented their Space Exhibition to the school and their families. They first decided how to advertise the event and then designed invitations, posters and wrote letters.

The exhibition was a huge success! The children were extremely proud of their Un-homework projects, dioramas, Peter Thorpe art pieces and science work. The other children in school were amazed at what Year 5 had produced and many of them learnt new and interesting facts.

It wasn’t long before the parents and family members came to see our exhibition…

Thank you to all who attended. The exhibition was a great success!

This half term in English, we have been studying the book The Tear Thief, by Carol Ann Duffy.

We have found the book so engaging and exciting. It has really helped us to develop our creative writing skills.

In The Tear Thief, Carol Ann Duffy describes emotions using colour symbolism. We thought about the colours that might represent different emotions and developed our colour mixing skills in art to make different shades of these. In English, we added words to our colour wheel and then put these into descriptive sentences.

We read a fantastic book called The Darkest Dark by astronaut Chris Hadfield. It helped us to think about our own aspirations. We considered what sort of traits we need to display to be able to achieve our goals.

Pole to Pole

For the second part of Autumn 2, our topic was Pole to Pole. Here are some of the things we learnt about: the different animals that live in the poles and their habitats; the climate and population; day and night at the poles; early expeditions and the race to the poles; famous people such as Ernest Shackleton, Roald
Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott; countries that lie within the Arctic circle and the oceans and seas surrounding the poles; and how to write a non-chronological report.

In PE on the run up to Christmas, our Yoga teacher, Mrs Anderson, taught us the 12 days of Christmas routine. Here is an example of what it looked like.
